Fully-Automated Analysis of Muscle Fiber Images with Combined Region and Edge-Based Active Contours

چکیده
This paper presents a new approach to automated muscle fiber analysis based on segmenting myofibers with combined region and edge based active contours. It provides reliable and fully-automated processing, thus, enabling time-saving batch processing of the entire biopsy sample stemming from routinely HE-stained cryostat sections. The method combines color, texture, and edge cues in a level set based active contour model succeeded by a refinement with morphological filters. False-positive segmentations as compared to former methods are minimized. A quantitative comparison between manual and automated analysis of muscle fibers images did not reveal any significant differences. In Proc. Bildverarbeitung für die Medizin, H. Handels, J. Fully automated segmentation and morphometrical analysis of muscle fiber images.
BACKGROUND Measurement of muscle fiber size and determination of size distribution is important in the assessment of neuromuscular disease. Fiber size estimation by simple inspection is inaccurate and subjective. Manual segmentation and measurement are time-consuming and tedious. We therefore propose an automated image analysis method for objective, reproducible, and time-saving measurement of ...
متن کاملFace Detection with methods based on color by using Artificial Neural Network
The face Detection methodsis used in order to provide security. The mentioned methods problems are that it cannot be categorized because of the great differences and varieties in the face of individuals. In this paper, face Detection methods has been presented for overcoming upon these problems based on skin color datum. The researcher gathered a face database of 30 individuals consisting of ov...
متن کامل[Article] Achieving the Way for Automated Segmentation of Nuclei in Cancer Tissue Images through Morphology-Based Approach: a Quantitative Evaluation
In this paper we address the problem of nuclear segmentation in cancer tissue images, that is critical for specific protein activity quantification and for cancer diagnosis and therapy. We present a fully-automated morphology-based technique able to perform accurate nuclear segmentations in images with heterogeneous staining and multiple tissue layers and we compare it with an alternate semi-au...
متن کاملA sophisticated edge detection method for muscle biopsy image analysis
Muscle biopsy image morphometric analysis provides valuable diagnostic information to expert clinicians. Subsequently, there is an indispensable need to support muscle fiber morphometry with computer-aided automated systems that require no user interaction. The first step towards producing such a system is the automated border detection of muscle fibers. The objective of this work is to investi...
متن کاملA Fully Automated Method to Detect and Segment a Manufactured Object in an Underwater Color Image
We propose a fully automated active contours-based method for the detection and the segmentation of a moored manufactured object in an underwater image. Detection of objects in underwater images is difficult due to the variable lighting conditions and shadows on the object. The proposed technique is based on the information contained in the color maps and uses the visual attention method, combi...
